Stewarts & Lloyds 15 Towcester 17
A good crowd turned out to watch this top of the table clash, and were left wondering how S&L did not secure the win which would have put them on top of the league on their own, but a loss drops them down to 3rd position, as Scouts routed Daventry.
Kicking up the hill into a fierce wind the S&L game plan was evident, to drive the ball at the Tows side, it was all S&L as time and again they drove, but the Tows defence held firm, the pressure was on, as Tows started to give away numerous penalties.
From a 5 metre scrum on 15 mins John Ironmonger picked up and drove over.
Tows hit back when a lose ball was picked up, and Tows ran the ball at S&L, they were asking questions of the S&L back line, a missed tackle saw a try from the Tows winger, and the conversion put them in front, a position they never relinquished.
S&L still drove at Tows and twice were held up over the line, as the game was well into injury time the S&L supporters were in good heart at the prospect of turning round 2 points adrift.
From ball 30 metres out the Tows scrum half looked for the pass but his options were poor so he swivelled and saw his drop goal sail between the sticks. With 6 mins injury time gone Tows opened up the S&L defence, a neat chip and catch over the S&L full back saw another Tows 7 points, this was a hammer blow to the Corby side as the ref blew for half time.
Second half it was Tows turn to drive the ball into the wind, and defend at the same time, Kirk Lindsay kicked a penalty after 10 mins and it was game on, S&L camped in the Tows 22, Tows were again giving away penalties in their own 22 as they repelled S&Ls attack, S&L rejecting the kick at goal preferring the scrum, but they became a little predictable and the chances went begging, as they again were held up over the line, it looked as though Kirk Lindsay had scored, but the ball was stripped from his grasp.
With 4 mins to go the backs moved the ball and Greg Cook went on one of his storming runs to score in the corner, Kirk Lindsay's superb conversion put S&L 2 points behind, and that was how it would stay, leaving a jubilant Tows side, and an S&L side wondering how they could not turn all that pressure into a win.
With no game next week they have a couple of injuries to fix and look forward to getting back to the training in preparation for the visit of Leighton Buzzard.
