The recent snow left all the pitches a little moist, the result of which was a slippery surface and a bar of soap for a ball. Handling quickly became rather tricky, resulting in plenty of scrummaging practice. Generally a very close game but overall the final score reflected the truth that S&L were that little bit more sure of themselves. The game was essentally won before kick off. The 2s got together in good time made good preperations and went out determined, with a plan and most importantly as a team. Some difficult conditions underfoot let Peterborough get their only score, our centres unable to change direction quickly enough. The 2s stuck to the game plan and kept at the opposition and alacrity was rewarded with skipper Rob Campbell crossing the line. The loose surface made kicking difficult, Alec Morgan missed the conversion, then also bounced a penalty off the upright. As the half approached, a S&L kept up the pressure earning a penalty. 3 points would have given us the lead at the half but with the snow biting in it was decided to go for the throw in. That didn,t come off and we turned around 2 points down.
A couple of changes at half time brought some fresh legs into play, allowing us to keep Borough pinned back in their own half. Their frustration at S&L's forwards relentless assault lead them to start killing the ball. Unfortunately Jonny Ironmonger decided to police that action before the referee did and earned a 10 minute rest. The 2s showed their true character, reduced to 14. Instead of arguing with the ref and each other they put in a huge forward barage which left Peterborough's defence struggling, earning a penalty, which this time Alec Morgan slotted, and then unleashing their pace outwide, fullback Kirk Lindsay crossing for the try. Willie Stuart at tight head prop deserves a mention in dispatches. His excellent scrummaging kept the pressure on in very difficult conditions underfoot. Also his high workrate, foraging and willingness to dabble in the dark arts where referees and often coaches fear to look, kept Borough out as they made one last effort to salvage the game.
An Excellent team performance. More of the same please.
